Most jobs around the house and shop need the same short list. This page turns that list into an order you can actually shop, without buying a hundred pieces you will never touch.
Step 1 — the driver
A cordless drill/driver with two batteries covers drilling and screw driving. If you drive a lot of long screws or lag bolts, add an impact driver on the same battery platform. Details in the drill buying guide.
Step 2 — turning and gripping
A combination wrench set (metric and SAE), a 3/8-inch socket set with ratchet, two pairs of pliers, and a screwdriver set with Phillips, slotted, and square drive. This covers assembly, plumbing basics, and engine-bay work.
Step 3 — layout and control
A 5 m tape measure, a 600 mm spirit level, a claw hammer, and a utility knife with spare blades. Cheap versions of these fail exactly when you need them, so buy once.
Step 4 — bits, blades, and safety
A drill and driver bit set matched to your chuck, and non-negotiables: safety glasses and work gloves. Add hearing protection before your first cutting job, not after.
Step 5 — a home for it all
A tool bag or box with a fixed slot for each tool, from day one. A toolkit you cannot find things in stops being used.
